WHEN IS IT TIME FOR HOSPICE

It’s common for family members to worry that they may be giving up on their loved one by considering hospice care. But hospice is not about giving up. It’s about living the way you want and focusing on comfort and quality when a cure is no longer likely.

Hospice often becomes a choice when you or a loved one are seeking relief from frequent emergency room visits or are physically or emotionally tired of challenging treatment that has no positive impact on life expectancy or quality.

Hospice makes sense when your focus turns from seeking a cure to seeking quality of days for the time that remains. It’s important to realize hospice is not just for the last days of life. In fact, hospice works best when chosen earlier allowing you and your family to gain the extra layer of care hospice brings sooner and take advantage of your full Medicare Benefit. One of the things we hear most often from our patients and their families is that they wished they had started hospice sooner.

If you’re not sure when the right time may be, here are some signs your loved one could benefit from our care:

  • They can no longer do simple tasks around the house
  • They have fallen in their home more than once
  • They have had a significant weight loss
  • They seem not to be enjoying food and are eating less
  • They can no longer bathe or use the bathroom themselves
  • They are sleeping more often
  • They seem or agitated or more stressed
  • They are experiencing changes in mental abilities
  • They have been hospitalized or have visited the ER several times in the past 6 months
  • They have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with limited life expectancy
  • They are talking to you about quality of life and are growing tired of aggressive treatment
  • You’re beyond the limits of what you can handle as their caregiver
